It all started in 1999, sitting in a bar with my friend Mac. As usual, we were having some drinks and exchanging stories about all the pathetic experiences we'd had with women that week. I’d often dredge up some of my more sensational examples from the past to make him feel better. At some point he said, “Dude, you ought to write that stuff down!” Within a month I had ten pages of random thoughts. Before long, the book had a life of its own. After 2 ˝ years, the outline had grown to 150 pages. Then I happened to get laid off from my job as a software engineer, so I threw myself into the project full-time.
I thought since I had developed an entire outline, I would be able to crank out the book in a few months - but the first draft took another 2 years to complete. Initially, my writing had no form and no coherent message. It was a brain dump. I ended up throwing out everything I had written in the first 6 months except for a few sentences. I was quite painful, but necessary.
Originally, I thought the book would be about the prevalence of female insanity in Western cultures. But the more I wrote, the more I realized how feminism has nurtured this insanity. Much of it was illustrated perfectly by the behavior and life decisions of a German feminist I'd known for 30 years, who I refer to in the book as "Petra." There were so many "Petra" stories that at first I thought I might be overemphasizing my relationship with her. But gradually I came to the realization that "Petra" was the perfect embodiment of feminism. As part of my research, I began to read the feminist books that had exercised such a heavy influence on Petra and so many other women. The feminist pathology was striking, and I finally understood the depth of the hatred directed by women toward unsuspecting men. These men must be alerted to the enormity of this well-organized and well-financed onslaught. It was then that feminism became a central theme of The Rantings. I decided it was also important to include my thoughts on the environment of political correctness which justifies and encourages this negativity. Unburdened by the constraints of mainstream commercial publishing, the book retains its raw and controversial nature. Great pains have been taken not to leave anyone unoffended.
Overall, I envisioned a book that was more entertaining than academic. Real stories are used to illustrate points more than raw data. The "Rant" is a motif used to mock the dismissal of male viewpoints by women as angry diatribes, and to defy the assumption that criticism of women victimizes them. Wit is used as a vehicle to expose the absurdities of romance and relationships, as well as to disguise pain. Unlike so many feminist books, the driving force behind The Rantings of a Single Male is not anger, but impatience. It asks why we tolerate lower standards of accountability, credibility, and sanity in women. It asks why men so willingly accept ridicule, servitude, and sexual humiliation. The challenge is not to transform women, but to awaken men. Only after respect for men has been restored can we begin the reconciliation with women.
After a dozen or so rewrites of each chapter, the book took on its unique form. Once the first draft was finished it took another 6 months to finish all the edits, rewrites and revisions. Then it was another 5 months to do the cover design and layout, find a printer, and get it up on Amazon. The 2cd edition is essentially the same as the original, with a lot of polishing, some updates of data and links, and a few extra punchlines. Enjoy.
